Porous liquid phases of indented colloids with depletion interactions

چکیده
We study indented spherical colloids, interacting via depletion forces. These systems exhibit liquid-vapor phase transitions whose properties are determined by a combination of strong “lockand-key” bonds and weaker non-specific interactions. As the propensity for lock-and-key binding increases, the critical point moves to significantly lower density, and the coexisting phases change their structure. In particular, the liquid phase is porous, exhibiting large percolating voids. The properties of this system depend strongly on the topological structure of an underlying bond network: we comment on the implications of this fact for the assembly of equilibrium states with controlled porous structures.

متن کاملConfocal microscopy of colloids
Colloids have increasingly been used to characterize or mimic many aspects of atomic and molecular systems. With confocal microscopy these colloidal particles can be tracked spatially in three dimensions with great precision over large time scales. This review discusses equilibrium phases such as crystals and liquids, and non-equilibrium phases such as glasses and gels. The phases that form dep...
متن کاملSelf-assembly of colloidal polymers via depletion-mediated lock and key binding.
We study the depletion-induced self-assembly of indented colloids. Using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulation techniques that treat the depletant particles explicitly, we demonstrate that colloids assemble by a lock-and-key mechanism, leading to colloidal polymerization. The morphology of the chains that are formed depends sensitively on the size of the colloidal indentation, with smaller va...
متن کاملMixtures of charged colloid and neutral polymer: influence of electrostatic interactions on demixing and interfacial tension.
The equilibrium phase behavior of a binary mixture of charged colloids and neutral, nonadsorbing polymers is studied within free-volume theory. A model mixture of charged hard-sphere macroions and ideal, coarse-grained, effective-sphere polymers is mapped first onto a binary hard-sphere mixture with nonadditive diameters and then onto an effective Asakura-Oosawa model [S. Asakura and F. Oosawa,...
متن کاملSingle-particle and collective slow dynamics of colloids in porous confinement.
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the slow dynamics of a hard sphere fluid confined in a disordered porous matrix. The presence of both discontinuous and continuous glass transitions as well as the complex interplay between single-particle and collective dynamics are well captured by a recent extension of mode-coupling theory for fluids in porous media. The degree of universality o...
